28 per cent of Tree Species in Canberra No Longer Suitable

After a prolonged drought that intensified around early 2017 and a summer of heat and fires in 2019 and 2020, Canberra's predominantly-European street trees are suffering. The added impact of parking cars adds to root compaction issues.

Experts believe that around 27 per cent of tree species are becoming unsuitable for Canberra's new summer normal.

Testing and analysis through projects like Which Plant Where? will enable planners to better choose species that can cope in the emerging conditions in Australia.
